what happens in houses
As much as urban life is defined by what happens in the public realm it is also informed by the lives people live in the privacy of their own home. In the following series of images I have explored how family photographs are being constructed. For this I photographed my neighbours, ‘the Wards’ in their living room yet at different times. In the final image I brought them together in the room by digitally manipulating the material. I had no wish to represent the ‘truth’ or take on a neutral position in this process as this is least likely to be on the agenda of any maker of family snaps. Instead I aimed to investigate how different ‘fronts’ are established in both individual and group photographs.
The work realised 2012 as a series of photographs and a moving image piece was shown in the following exhibitions: An Urban Analogue (2013) at Goldsmiths in London and Clause Four at Home (2013) in Swanton Abbott.
