Between Worlds
In 2004 a new topic began to emerge in my work - the socio-cultural landscape of transitive places. More specifically still, I looked at the constructed landscape, the artificiality of managed nature and the role of literature in mediating children’s play.
Playing children form the central motifs of the series ‘Between Worlds’ (2010). How they interact with and adapt manmade structures and naturalistic landscapes. The images aim to capture the tension in the moment of a child’s immense physical yet ephemeral presence; the child as subject and not object – the controller rather than the controlled within a present situation, a here and now. The series became the starting point for my research into improvised play and urban space as part of my MA Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths at the Centre for Urban and Community Research.
The series was shown in the solo exhibition Between Worlds (2011) at BendInTheRiver gallery in Gainsborough. Some of the series was shown in the group show Regrouping (2012) at Workstation in Sheffield.
