St. John the Divine, 173’9” x 57’5”
I was most interested in how a building such as St. John the Divine, which is no more a church but not yet an art space, is being perceived. Whilst observing people’s reaction to the interior of St. John, I became aware of how much impact of the sheer physical enormity of the space in itself had. This led me to engage especially with St. John’s physical dimensions and Its previous structure of usage. For this I retraced different paths that a possible user of the church might have taken. Sound and image are not synchronised allowing for the person walking can to be heard but to be not seen. However, through listening carefully to the sound whilst watching the moving image, the viewer can determine the shifting position of the person within the space.
Length: 13’49”
Work was developed as part of a commission to explore the potential of this space in 2005/06. The work was shown in the solo show One two Infinity (2006) at BendInTheRiver gallery and at the building itself. St. John the Divine is now an art and community centre called x-church.
