Layers 1 – 7, Victoria Baths Manchester

In this series of medium format analogue photographs I attempted to subtly reveal the complex and many folded ways how one can relate to the Victoria Baths. For this I focus on the building in its neglected state. The lens of the camera recorded what was in front of it, the lighted reflected by the surfaces, the peeling paint, the rust and scrapes next to the the materials that were able to hold their shininess. The building offered many surprises with its layers of traces of past and present usage and the make shift structures that had appeared, partly for a specific purpose, partly because of the increasingly derelict state of the building. The placement of the photographs in their site specific context was an attempt to intensify the tension between the here and now and the there and then.

Layers 1 – 7 was shown as part of the commissioned group exhibition For the Time Being: A Promise of Progress (2004) at Victoria Baths in Manchester.
